The Diesel Wall is an annual international public art competition, the winning design is (in the UK) exhibited on the side of The Urbis building in Manchester, at a size of 29m x 18m.
Public art has to interact with its environment at the same time as make some sort of relevant connection to the people who look at it. My design therefore was a result of trying to work with the building rather than simply using it as a wall on which to hang a picture.
Both Blow and Suck are about the interaction of people with the urban environment. I therefore wanted to introduce some organic forms and processes (like breathing) into the very structure of the building.
I realised that on the scale of the Diesel Wall simplicity was going to be paramount, and that something that was in essence illusory could have a big impact.
